The missionaries will say Isaiah 9:6-7 says "For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given. And the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." They may then tell you that the New Testament fulfills this in Luke 1:32-33 ("He will be called the Son of the Most High. The L-RD G-d will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." NIV).
The Reply is: Notice how the Christian translation capitalizes the word son. They are assuming that this is a messianic prophecy and that son is a divine epethet. Many people have sons in this world, not one of them is a diety.
The passage is in Isaiah 9:5-6 in the JPS (and all Jewish Scriptures) and says "For a child has been born to us, a son has been given us. And authority has settled on his shoulders. He has been named "The Mighty G-d is planning grace, the Eternal Father, a peaceable ruler" [note: G-d is planning grace and a peaceable ruler for Israel]--In a token of abundant authority and of peace without limit upon David's throne and kingdom, that it may be firmly established in justice and equity now and evermore. The zeal of the L-RD of Hosts shall bring this to pass."
Soncino's commentary says the chapter is about the fall of Assyria and the anouncement of the birth of Hezekiah. Others that it announces Hezekiah's rule, his assending the throne. Notice that it says "a child HAS been born to us". This is an event that has just occured, not an event in the future. A future event would say a child will be born to us, but this is NOT what the verse says. Since the birth happend in Ahaz's day, it could not refer to Jesus, who was born many hundreds of years later.
It is important to add that many people have names that contain G-d or L-RD in them. In fact Joshua, in Hebrew Yihoshua, means the L-RD will save. Jews for Jesus call Jesus Yeshua, the Aramaic form of Joshua. Jesus' Aramiac name no more makes him G-d (c"vs) then did Joshua son of Nun's (the one who lead the people after Moses). In I Chronicles, there is a person named Yechieli, meaning "My my G-d live" and in Ezra, a variation of that name is Yechiel, meaning "may G-d live". Yehu (Jehu of I Kings) means "he is G-d" and yet one cannot say that this person was G-d any more than once can say Joshua son of Nun was, any more than anyone named Joshua was.
